No resumption of negotiations at “this stage” with the Europeans, according to Iran

Iran is not planning to resume negotiations with European countries over its nuclear program “at this stage” despite the return of sanctions, Iranian diplomacy said today.

At the initiative of France, the United Kingdom and Germany, the UN reimposed sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program on September 28.

“We are not considering negotiations at this stage,” Iranian diplomatic spokesman Esmail Baghai told a press conference, adding that Iran would examine the “consequences” and “complications” of the reinstatement of sanctions, which were lifted ten years ago.

“Of course, diplomacy, in the spirit of maintaining contacts and consultations, will continue,” the Iranian spokesman stressed.

“Whenever we believe that diplomacy can be effective, we will definitely make decisions based on the country’s interests and priorities,” he said.

Iran’s nuclear program has long poisoned Iran’s relations with Western countries, most notably the United States, which suspects, along with Israel, the Iranian regime’s sworn enemy, that Tehran wants to develop an atomic bomb.

Iran denies having such military ambitions but insists on its right to nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, mainly to generate electricity.
