Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said, quoted by RT, that Ukraine is openly planning to use long-range Tomahawk missiles supplied by the US to carry out “terrorist attacks” in Russia.
As one would expect, if that happens, Moscow will give a nuclear response, since it will not be able to know whether the missiles in question are carrying nuclear warheads at that time or not.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Zakharova said that “the Kiev regime does not hide its preparation for new terrorist attacks against our country with the aim of escalating the conflict.”
She added that it is “obvious” that these plans were being drawn up based on the possible arrival of the Tomahawks.
Last month, US officials suggested that Washington was considering supplying Kiev with the missiles – which have a range of around 2,500km. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky later said he had discussed the issue with US President Donald Trump, while Trump told reporters he could approve the deliveries if he decided that “this war is not going to be settled,” the Russian outlet noted.
Moscow has warned against the deliveries, saying they would lead to escalation and be detrimental to US-Russia relations, which are showing some signs of improvement.
Earlier this month, Zelensky claimed he had approved “asymmetric responses” to Russia, to be led by Kiev’s special services. He also threatened to launch attacks on the Belgorod and Kursk regions on the border with Russia to cause power outages, while warning that Ukraine could try to cause a total blackout in Moscow, according to RT.
Zakharova went on to criticize the EU, noting that by seeking to facilitate Tomahawk deliveries to Kiev, the bloc is prolonging the conflict and showing a “complete lack of political will for peace.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that the Tomahawk missile deliveries would lead to a “new stage of escalation,” adding that their use “without the direct involvement of American military personnel is impossible.”
The situation is critical as the Tomahawk missiles are a real weapon that worries Moscow and any substantial use of them could trigger other kinds of events.
