Russia launched a counterattack in Kursk and announced that it had recaptured ten villages

President Volodymyr Zelensky said today that the Russian military has begun a counteroffensive in Russia's western Kursk region, where Kiev launched a major invasion last month.

He also said that Ukraine expected a counterattack.

Russia's Defense Ministry said it had recaptured ten villages from Ukrainians in two days in Russia's Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces claim to control about a hundred residential areas after an August offensive in that border region.

"During offensive operations, units of the "North" troop group liberated 10 locations in two days," the Russian ministry said in a statement.
Zelensky rejects China-Brazil peace initiative

President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the China-Brazil peace initiative on the war in Ukraine as "disastrous" and complained that Kiev is not participating in the process.

China and Brazil called for an international peace conference to be held in May, recognized by Russia and China, with equal participation of all sides, as well as a fair discussion of all peace plans.

"The China-Brazil proposal is ... disastrous, it's just a political statement," Zelensky said in an interview published today by Brazil's Metropoles network.

"How can you say 'here's our initiative' without asking anything from us?"

Zelensky said the initiative lacks respect for Ukraine and its territorial integrity, according to the video released by Metropoles, and that Russian President Vladimir Putin must take steps to show he wants the war to end.

The Ukrainian leader said he was willing to discuss the proposals with China and Brazil.

Reuters reported in June that China was trying to secure the participation of developing countries in this six-point initiative, presented before the Ukraine-led conference in Switzerland.

Putin said in May that he supports Chinese peace proposals and said this month that China and Brazil, as well as India, could act as mediators in potential peace talks over Ukraine.
