“During his emergency transfer to the hospital, the judge succumbed to his injuries on the way”
A judge at the Tirana Court of Appeals was killed today inside the courtroom by a man who was present before him and was soon arrested, Albanian police said in a press release.
Astrit Kalaja was presiding over the hearing when the man pulled out a gun and shot him. “During his emergency transfer to the hospital, the judge succumbed to his injuries on the way,” the police said.
A father and son, who were parties to the trial, were also injured and taken to hospital, but their lives are not in danger.
According to the local press, the perpetrator, who was in court over a land dispute, reportedly said that he "lost" and that's why he shot at the judge.
