Risk of direct military conflict between Europe and Russia over nuclear weapons

As the Russian Ambassador to Belgium Denis Gonchar warned in an interview with TASS, the implementation of the EU nuclear weapons development scenario carries a serious risk of a direct military conflict between Russia and Europe,

“Ideas for creating a ‘nuclear umbrella’ separate from the US are being formulated in Europe, in particular through the implementation of such an adventure under the auspices of France. And recently, it became known that EU leaders are secretly negotiating the development of their own nuclear weapons,” the ambassador noted.

“Obviously, the implementation of such scenarios would significantly increase the risks to our country’s national security and ultimately lead relations between Russia and Europe to a dead end, significantly increasing the likelihood of a direct military conflict. "One hopes that common sense will prevail and that the European public will prevent its political and military leaders from implementing their destructive plans," he emphasized, according to the Russian media outlet.
