Suburbs of the Syrian capital, where members of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Iran's Revolutionary Guards and Palestinian factions are believed to be based, have been the target of Israeli raids for the second consecutive day, according to Syrian media.
The Syrian news agency SANA reported that an Israeli strike today targeted the Mazeh district in Damascus, where yesterday it was the target of heavy shelling by Israeli forces.
"An Israeli attack hit Maze", SANA pointed out. The UN headquarters, embassies and Syrian security institutions are located in the luxurious Maze district.
Commanders of Lebanon's Hezbollah and Iran's Revolutionary Guards, based in Syria, are known to reside in the district, according to residents who fled after recent strikes that killed Hezbollah and Guards officers. Apartment complexes in Mazeh have been used in the past by authorities to house leaders of Palestinian factions, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad.
Yesterday Thursday, Israeli raids hit this district, as well as Kunchaya in the suburbs of the Syrian capital.
On Thursday, at least 20 people, including Palestinians and pro-Iranian fighters, were killed in Israeli raids targeting apartment buildings in Mazeh, Kundajaya on the outskirts of the Syrian capital, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The attacks coincided with a visit to Damascus by senior Iranian official Ali Larizani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Larizani met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to discuss "regional developments and Israeli escalation" against the Palestinians and Lebanon, according to the Syrian presidency.
Israel has been launching strikes against Iranian-linked targets in Syria for years, but has stepped up its attacks since October 7, 2023, the day Hamas invaded Israel and the start of the war in the Gaza Strip.
An Israeli military spokesman confirmed yesterday's strikes in Syria against "military bases of Islamic Jihad," an armed group operating in Gaza.
