At least 40 villagers were killed yesterday Sunday in the attack by gunmen in the community of Duba, in the Borno state of northeastern Nigeria, with the authorities attributing the massacre to jihadists.
In particular, the authorities believe that the perpetrators are fighters of Boko Haram or the Islamic State group in the West Africa (s.s. which came from the breakup of the first).
Babagana Zulum, governor of Borno state, condemned the attack and called on the military to take decisive action against the perpetrators. At the same time, he appealed to farmers and fishermen in the area not to move outside the security corridors demarcated by the armed forces.
Borno state has been the scene of a jihadist insurgency since 2009 that has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people and displaced millions of others. Although the Nigerian military has repeatedly assured that the jihadists have been defeated, attacks on security forces, as well as civilians, continue.
An ambush against a military patrol last week killed 34 jihadists and six soldiers.
